Notes cover price: 15 cents cover: Sidney Hillman (1887–1946) was an American labor leader. Born in Žagarė, Lithuania, (then part of the Russian Empire), he was the son of Jewish parents. In 1906, he joined an exodus from Russia, traveling under a false passport through Germany to Manchester, England. In 1907, he emigrated again, first to New York City and soon to Chicago. He found employment as a clerk in the infants' wear department of Sears, Roebuck and then as an apprentice garment cutter for Hart Schaffner & Marx men's wear. He became a leader in what began as a spontaneous strike by a handful of workers but became a city-wide strike of 45,000 garment workers in 1910. He became the head of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America and a key figure in the founding of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (C.I.O.) and in marshaling labor's support for Franklin Roosevelt and the Democratic Party.
