cover: Wilhelm II (1859–-1941) was the last German Emperor (Kaiser) and King of Prussia. He reigned from 1888 until his abdication in 1918 shortly before Germany's defeat in World War I. He was the eldest grandchild of England's Queen Victoria. Although he was second in line to succeed his grandfather on the German and Prussian thrones, his grandfather and father both died in 1888, making Wilhelm emperor and king. During World War I he left virtually all decision-making regarding the war in the hands of the German military. The resulting dictatorship led to the United States' entry into the war in 1917.
