Notes cover: Stanley Baldwin (1867–1947) was a British Conservative statesman who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on three occasions between the world wars. He entered the House of Commons in 1908, succeeding his father. In 1922 he became Chancellor of the Exchequer and then Prime Minister and Leader of the Conservative Party in 1923, but he called an election in December of that year and lost the Conservatives' majority. However, he won the 1924 general election and formed his second government. He then lost the 1929 general election. In 1931, with the onset of the Great Depression, the Labour Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald formed a National Government with mostly Conservatives as ministers. It won a majority in the 1931 general election. Baldwin took over many of the Prime Minister's duties due to MacDonald's failing health and in 1935, officially replaced him as Prime Minister, plus winning the 1935 general election with a large majority. Baldwin retired in 1937. He is generally ranked in the upper half of British prime ministers.
