cover: Syngman Rhee (1875–1965) was the president of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea (1919-1925 and 1947-1948) and was elected President of South Korea in the 1948 election. He adopted a strongly anti-communist and pro-American stance, and led South Korea through the Korean War (1950-1953). Widely regarded as an authoritarian dictator, Rhee's three-term presidency was characterized by corruption and political repression, including ordering the killings of over 14,000 suspected communists in South Korea. His popularity declined after the Korean War, and he resigned in 1960.
