cover: Union Pacific steam locomotive #803 near Glenns Ferry, Idaho

You may wonder which was the first railroad to abandon use of steam locomotives and when it did so. That question appears to have been settled in the letters section (Railway Post Office) of this issue. The answer is the Texas Mexican, a small railroad which linked the Missouri Pacific lines with the National Railways of Mexico at Laredo. It operated it last steam locomotive in spring 1939. At least nine other railroads, most larger than the Texas Mexican, gave up steam locomotives by January 1950.
