Back in the late 60s, you could not get skilled machinist for love or money, so had no choice but to go automated as with a lot of to-days manufacturing.

What will happen when everything is automated and no one has jobs, who will have money to pay for the goods, don’t think the profit makers (where’s my bonus) thought of that.

Ref: Sgt. Pepper patch, after the logo has been embroidered, the fabric is then over locked on an overlocking machine which cuts and stitches the circle to give the finish patch.

 Thanks for the video getalife.

... It's always nice to see a dozen people without jobs! :)

@Magic Marmalade, I thought I added this video , obviously not, hope this helps explain how badges are embroidered, large quantities like the Beatle badge, would be done using a large portal frame in stead of the single head frames in video.

All computerised, once frames loaded in machine, press button and walk away till finished.

 Computerised multi head machines.

It's not boring... these are niggling questions you're answering for me.

It's still something like wizardry to me how they embroider something like this.

Auto trimming came in around 1978.

If there was a very large amount to be done then they could have used a Schiffli machine, try Googling Schiffli machine for more info.

How on earth do you know about this auto-trim thing?!!!

I'm constantly amazed by the things people know around here.

If you do a search (image search) for: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band sew on badge, there are a couple of images of variants of this, and in better condition too in a couple of cases.

Here has a couple:

 Seems reasonable to me.

We don't want 20 different entries for what is essentially the same product.

So, at some point someone will turn up a later one. I guess they will all go here, provided the design is the same. (I think we should allow colour variations too, so long as it's the same design?)

The back will give a clue whether it was auto trim or not, auto trim
machines came much later than the 60s.

Just had a look at image. Looks like it’s not a auto trim and has no heat seal backing,
so could be original or late 60s early 70s

Yeah, difficult with a title like this one, as it's a: "You name it, it has been made" title. Only the Pope and Elvis probably come close to having as much stuff made for each individual thing they do.

I'm kind of hoping other variations will be added here, perhaps find out who made them.

I wouldn't mind betting these sew-on badges have been in production more or less continuously. I remember them from the 70s and 80s. Metal badges too - there's one on here already.

I did have a little hunt around on the net for info about it a year or two back, and did find a couple of others on some other site... they had subtle variations in the colour of stitching in the background, writing, and borders... but no dates.

So I'm taking My aunt's word for it.

Will not be offended in the least if she's wrong, I'd rather know the facts.

 What a fabulous item.

Not bad for the first day of full beta testing!

 As requested.

was sewn onto a blanket for a time, that I can personally recall, and has lived in a n envelope for twenty years or so.

Any chance of seeing the back of it, the embroidery and fabric look to good for
forty eight year old.

She had it for as long as I can remember, but I make no guarantees of the quality of her memory!

If you'd prefer to just generalise it as a sixties item, then please do... until someone can state otherwise and tell me it's a seventies item (In which case I'll be having words with her!!!).

... better check that Holy Grail she gave me is real too!

Wow! I'll leave it as it is for now then.

It was my Aunt's. She got it as a Christmas present along with the album "In the sixties".

(She lost the album...bum!).

This probably isn't from 1967. Any idea which decade you bought it in?

Things like this are very hard to get an exact date for.
