I liked the comment that was made about how when the CDs took hold the scientist like so many other binned their vinyl for the new format. I was fortunate that at the end of the 80s I moved to Winchester which had an established car boot sale at the Cattle Ground. Joe Public was at that time clearing out on a huge scale which basically meant that I picked up nearly every major item in my collection for I guess around a £1 a piece over a several year period. There were three of us there every Sunday morning without fail, the other two I though a little weird as they were older but I mined their knowledge as to what to buy, rushing from one car to another trying to get first dabs on a box of records.
My collection grew every week with every major UK release from Stones/Beatles/Led Zep/Marley through to stuff (at 25ish) I had never heard of such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Miles Davies etc.
I too let my collection start to go in drips and drabs at the turn of the century but thankfully never fully went down that line. Again the trusty car boot sale came to the rescue.
Great finds are replicated now on a smaller scale these days rather than every visit; weather depending I hit the two local boots here in Pembs every Sat/Sun morning normally coming home with something worth while. It is amazing what still turns up - last weekend a Elton John DJM demo, a copy of the Red Beat 45 (sold by one of the original band members) along with another 20+ UK demos in mint all at 50p each along with a selection of UK 70/80s albums for £1 a piece.
This morning its wet so with a little reluctance I have given it a miss but don't worry, I have already checked BBC Weather, tomorrow is dry and sunny so you'll know where I will be between 6:30 - 9:30am
