 Sorry about that Neil.... but I was trying to understand the situation just like Cam last year, and found it just as confusing and convoluted.

basically, from what I can glean, The Company in question (I can't remember who now) initially made the DIGIPAK design to appeal to those still used to vinyl and other media format packaging, and found the standard jewel case a little cold and non-descript so made these, which others copied and expanded on. (Lately I've found this to be the case for myself... they look better on the shelf, and easier to read, rather than the mind boggling anonymity the jewel cases present when found in quantity in racks in charity shops etc. (They give me "CD Blindness"... I look, but my brain switches off and cannot see them) especially as I am having a whale of a time hoovering them up while the getting's good!))

But the dizzying array of designs can leave you flummoxed... So if it's not specifically a Digipak, and not a jewel case, I try to be simply descriptive about the digi-container when putting them up here.

See: Radiohead - In Rainbows

I pondered a while what to call this thing before arriving at digi-packet. Others may include the hardback book design like sigur ros' Takk, or Boards of Canada's Geogaddi (Digi-booklet (?)), or larger ones like the 12" x 12" hardback book version of In Rainbows or Chris Rea' s Blue Guitars, where I simply describe them as books.

I think there's potential growth of value in the collectors market for non jewel case editions (digipacks of any description), as they are limited (I think I've said this elsewhere), the card sleeves are prone to a much greater rate of deterioration over time, and like any other CDs, people treat them like crap, because they think of them as disposable items or indestructible (Which they apparently test to the limit).

Case in point: Coldplay's Viva la Vida.

This gatefold mini LP style card sleeve has booklet insert (Unattached or secured parts), and while popular and ubiquitous, and therefore currently cheap (£1 in charity shops), a good 90% of those I've come across are in great distress, either missing booklet, worn and torn sleeves, discs which have been apparently used as sandpaper, or replaced with copied discs.

Although I'm no fan of Coldplay, their fan base will have grown to an age of affluence in a couple to a few years time and want copies of this, which I have four of.

(Cynical or smart?)
