I've seen those Pan ones, which have a number on the front. That's just one run of books among thousands, and I think they are probably the only ones. But we're being told, "almost all paperback publishers from penguin books onwards allocated their own, unique within the publishing house, cat#s to the titles they published".

So, if I pick up an old paperback from my shelf, chances are it will have a cat number? I've tried it, and they don't. Someone show me an old Penguin paperback with a catalogue number, because I just don't see it.

- i've no scanner, but the penguin p/b of kai lung unrolls his mat by ernest bramah is penguin 108 - all three printings of it, including the two impressions of the the first: the number is at the base of the spine of the book on the third printing (and, iirc, on those of the previous two, and on the matching paper dust-jackets); it was sometimes (? for one or more definite periods?) also printed on the fly-page above a brief introduction (usually to the author, not the novel), and in the rear pages' advertisements for other penguins (and pelicans°) then currently available.

° - pelican cat#s began with an "A"; and later introductions such as puffins with a "PS", peacocks with a "PK"...
