	Gill Sans SUBS Member since Apr 2014 1108 Points Moderator	Before MM replies with his views, let me jump in with a reply to his comments posted on the Classical album of Moravian Folk Songs The fact that a musical style is absorbed into 'Classical Music' does not qualify that style as Classical in my view. Freddie Mercury had a distinctly operatic style to his compositions and performance, but you wouldn't argue that Queen were 'Classical'. If Classical music has its precedents they must chiefly be the music of the Roman and Orthodox Churches, coming before popular dances. I concede that Courtley dances can be considered Classical, usually having appeared as Classical compositions. My own definition is that Classical Music, whether Western, Indian or Oriental, is born of academic study at music schools and colleges, adopting the standards of such teaching. It is necessarily conservative, developing slowly. Modern Jazz might therefore also qualify as meeting the same criteria. Jazz did however develop from quite different roots, and, most importantly, sounds distinctly different! I would argue that Folk and Pop are intimately related, by intent and outcome: sometimes you just have to listen, then make a personal decision as to which world an artist belongs in.
