My guess (and that's all it is) is that they wanted to make a distinction between the label and the D.G.G. company which owned other labels like Archiv, Polydor, Heliodor, Karrussell, etc and distributed overseas labels like MGM, Stax, RSO and so on. I would just use the shortened form, which is still in use.
