The new fields for "Performers" in Classical items are now being used by many contributors and this is likely to grow in value as more are added.

Composers should be treated the same way as Soloists or Conductors; of course they do not 'perform' but it is a useful way to group their output. For example, you could search for Mendelssohn or Messiaen and hope to find every record which has compositions by them. If you see a record which does not have the composer or conductor listed as a 'Perfomer' please use 'Add missing Info' to edit the item.

It will be the same for orchestras, choirs and chamber ensembles, and special care will be needed until we all become used to the idea.

The first point to note is that 'Performers' must be added individually. If there is more than one composer, conductor or soloist, please add them separately, for example if you had a CD with the composers Andrzej Panufnik, Antonio Vivaldi, Arnold Bax, Bohuslav Martinu, Franz Schubert, Gabriel Fauré, Malcolm Arnold, Michael Haydn, Robert Schumann, Sergei Prokofiev, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, they should all be entered separately.

In particular we do not want to see "Mozart and Beethoven" or "Mozart, Beethoven" listed because there was never a composer called "Mozart and Beethoven", and because that record will be missing from the large Classical World discographies for either composer.

The other point is please do not add "Various Composers", "Various Soloists", "Various" conductors, orchestras, choirs or any other "Various" Performers, as that will not help anyone to find Mendelssohn or Messiaen. Each performer must be added separately.

"Various Artists" remains the correct way to enter the Main Artist for a new item which shows more than one artist in the title. If entered correctly, the 'Performers' will show exactly which orchestras and conductors are on that record.
