Johann Sebastian Bach, and the other names you mention, were clearly not performing artists and shouldn't be listed as such. Agreed.

However none of them were recording artists either. That's where the waters get muddy. Paul McCartney is a recording artist, and he puts his own work out - does he have to perform for the work to still be considered "by" him?

I have a Beatles album where the backing strings to Eleanor Rigby are included as an isolated, stand-alone track. (Anthology II - listed on 45 Worlds.) No Beatles play on it, but it's inavriably credited to The Beatles.
