A few short years back, you could easily find 78s in a charity shop, but I have noticed them being absent... I suppose if they can't sell them as readily as vinyl or CDs, they just occupy space that something else that would sell would otherwise be in...

...Plus, they tend to deteriorate, through being poorly handled - people, it seems, just throw them out of the way to get to the vinyl... lots of broken 78 bits when you do find them.

That said, a couple of little tricks of the bin digger's trade I've learned:

Firstly, get away from large town centre charity shops, where the above issues are more of a concern, and find Proper charity shops out in the suburbs, or otherwise out in the sticks...

(Often large shops loaded with guff, more in the style of an old fashioned junk shop)

... Google is your best friend here - use Google maps to find little local shopping precincts and local shop parades amidst an estate, you often find an occasional charity shop on one of these, which has he added benefit of not drawing the record collecting masses, so when you find music in them, it's all yours! :)

(Streetview is great way to do preliminary research, and go there without having gone there first... you can figure if it's worth the effort - when you see a clutch of shops in a given area, it's worth a trip, as opposed to just one, which might not having anything at all, and you've wasted a journey for no reward.)

Secondly, check out House clearance businesses, and their associated shops - furniture places and such - these guys are more concerned with getting the contents of a house through and out the door... Primarily they make the money from the furniture itself. often have vinyl and CDs, tapes, as well as the occasional box of 78s, which they want rid of pronto! = bargain city!

Finally, as you are talking 78s, which are now regarded by the general populace as "antiques", head down to your local antiques shop, who usually have a box or two of them stashed somewhere.

(Trendy, shabby-chic (cheek) shops sometimes have these things for "colour" or effect).
