Topic: Thought you had 78s that had survived bad treatment?

I somehow came across this story at the weekend. The reporting's more than a bit confused, but I found it interesting nonetheless.

When the submarine U534 was sunk in the Kattegat in May 1945, the crew abandoned it at considerable depth. One of the things left behind by the crew in a sealed compartment - and thus preserved - was a box of 78s.

Many decades later (1993) , the submarine was salvaged and ultimately ended up in Liverpool. The 78s were in surprisingly good order, and eventually after 30 years someone thought to try playing them.....

Usual journalist misconceptions apply - "vinyl" rather than "shellac", and artists and composers for the surviving 78s get rather confusingly mixed up.

No mention abover or elsewhere of a surviving gramophone player, so I guess that was in one of the flooded compartments.
