I've changed my technique and got a noticeably better result.
1] Im photoing the records flat on a table beside the window in daylight
2] I have the room light switched on
3] turn off the camera flash

That kills most of the unwanted reflection

Now I am using an old Nikon coolpix which has a handy fold out monitor screen on it so I have the focus set as standard [ie dont use the zoom] and I have tried to get the camera as square onto the flat record as possible. This ideally needs a tripod which can tilt the camera to a full 90 degrees and hold it steady, I think.
I have redone the following Motorhead records - Ace of Spades and the back of "Beer Drinkers".
