Notes

Label description:
Reet Maff'l is a Now Age Spoken Weird and sound collage collaboration between artist Luke Drozd and artist/musician Andy Abbott. Luke Drozd is best known for his illustration work and gig posters for clients including They Might Be Giants and comedian Stewart Lee. Andy plays guitar in the bands That Fucking Tank, Nope and solo as Elizabeth. They have both worked together in the art collective Black Dogs where they have undertaken commissions and exhibitions for Tate Modern, MK Gallery and numerous self initiated projects. Reet Maff'l began when Luke asked Andy to create some improvised guitar backing for his short stories and accompanying slide show. Since then they have developed site-responsive and context specific sets for a variety of scenarios including performing in a spaceship on top of Matt's Gallery in London, a performance in Bare Plume Cafe at Supernormal Festival 2015, doing a set about dialect for a live art event in Whitechapel, and recent site specific performances for Homesession, Barcelona; the Word Gulch / the Barbican, London; and Silk Mill Museum, Derby.

'...the band employ a collage of concrete tomfoolery, as on “Maffle: A Definition”, which could easily be the Mighty Boosh releasing a record on 1080. Tonally, what this record most reminds me of is Malcom Middleton’s collab record with David Shrigley, in which the artists acted in earnest, making heartfelt, post-rocking compositions, while guests just talked about animals fucking. This record has a debt to noise, dark ambient and general thinking person’s field music, but its stories are gleefully dumb.' - Norman Records

'It is a tale to be told, one which is played out over the course of this deliciously composed record with random abandon. You’re given a few cues to follow along to, themes if you will but these are slippery. In fact, despite the brevity, Reet Maff’l take delight in sliding in and out of focus as a matter of routine.' - Santa Sangre Magazine
