I only own one album with an obi strip and only because it was cheap
But what's the big excitement about them some collectors/dealers seem to have. They are basically price stickers with a Japanese translation if necessary.
So why the big price hike for a record with one compared to one without??
Are the Japanese paying top price for UK LPs with old HMV price stickers on ??

Actually the japanese do pay top dollar for UK records (in mint cond.) I've seen their dealers buy records by the large box load at fairs before...including some with those round stickers you get...
The obi is more than just a price tag though - it's unique to each release, and has info on it. I suppose it's a bit like an insert, albeit on the outside.

That's a good way of looking at it. Im not opposed to having them in my collection its only if they come along cheaply enough. I'm not going to pay £20 extra for an album with an obi same as I wouldn't pay that much extra for an album with merchandise flyers etc.
For me an item without OBI is just like an item with missing insert. Incomplete :)
Japanese releases of non-Japanese artists are usually bought for pure collecting purposes by foreigners hence this huge difference in value. I suppose in Japanese internal market OBIs are not that collectible.
Btw, sometimes OBI is the only place where a release label is printed.

What is our policy now for CDs with Obi? Do we have the top image as the CD in jewel case with Obi or the front of the booklet as the top image with the CD in jewel case with Obi relegated (to second image or even last image?)?
