I'm a bit curious as to how accurate using the matrix number is dating MGM UK 78s.
From about 1949 on, they seem to be in the for of xx-x-xxxx as in 49-S-1234, with the first bit being real close to the year of issue. However if you look at:
The US release says 1949, but the UK says 1950, even though the matrix number is 1949. So, it looks like the matrix number MAY get you close to the date, but further research is always needed. Look at
"The matrix (as opposed to the catalogue number) relates to the recording date?"
Yes, normally assigned soon after the recording session - it's not always
a reliable indication of the release year, e.g. tracks recorded in December are usually issued in the following year.
When you're dealing with UK issues that show US matrix numbers it's
even less reliable... the best way to estimate the year of release is to check
adjacent catalogue numbers .. you won't go too far wrong that way.
