There seems to be no clear consensus on this yet. Numerous records are listed under the HMV / Victor name, and only a few as just Victor. I would think that "His Master's Voice" is their company phrase and that Victor is the name of the label. The earliest ones say Victor Record and have the dog-and-gramophone logo and the slogan. Later ones have HMV in large font and Victor in a smaller font underneath, but they all have Victor catalogue numbers according to the Victor encyclopedic site and 78discography.com.
Can we please get a ruling on which name you'd like to lump all the records under? Thank you.
Aren't some of the ones with His Master's Voice in the larger font some 50's issues of UK HMV recordings? I think there was a short period from about 1953 or 1954 where RCA intentionally emphasied the HMV name for those, so maybe they need to be treated as HMV/Victor?
I'm sorry, I should have been more specific. I was speaking not of the British (or any other foreign) label, but of Canadian and US issues. There are records on "His Master's Voice" that do not say "Victor" on the labels, which are clearly separate.
However, there are records on "Victor" that have a "His Master's Voice" logo that are listed here under a label called "His Master's Voice / Victor." But if you look them up in the Victor Encyclopedic listings or on 78discography.com, they are all under the Victor label with Victor numbers. It's a bit deceptive, because on the labels, "His Master's Voice" is often in a larger typeface than the word "Victor," but the records clearly have Victor numbers as archived in the company's files. I have several company paper sleeves for these discs, all of which say "Victor Records."
I was hoping to have the staff look into categorizing all of these records under the Victor name. It would make our listings compatible with what the Victor archives say they are, which would be of great benefit to collectors and discographers worldwide.
I'm not including RCA Victor records in this suggestion, as that is a later incarnation of the same label with the addition of its parent company in the name. There are Victor records with the older label design, pressed by RCA Victor and which have 20-xxxx RCA numbers, but the labels still say "Victor" and have a "His Master's Voice" logo.
