I am curious if anyone knows about the variances in release dates on 78s for popular (as in swing, jazz, big band) recording. Say for example that you have something like: Moonlight Serenade by Glenn Miller on US Bluebird 10214. This was released in 1939 in the USA. We also have it listed as Regal Zonophone MR.3090 inthe UK in 1939. I wonder how close the UK release date was to the US.
Reason I ask is because of some requests to provide dates for some UK releases by VinylPassion, and I wonder if using the US year is valid
I don't think the US rel. dates are valid for anything outside the US.
US artists are sometimes (not very often), rel. outside USA even before the US release of the same recording. Often on another label. But also on the same label.
theres no general rule of thumb as regards to contempoary UK/US releases tho in general it took maybe 3/4/5 months for stuff to get a release in the UK after the US release in lots of cases tho ..like releases from the various shows, sometimes it took years to get a British release after the American one, A couple of prime examples are..Oklahoma US 43..UK 47, and Carousel US 44...UK 50 :)
