- hi; i know that the transformations, some directed by take-overs & sales, of the catalogue that (mostly?) had once been pye records', would fuel several years' worth of "transcription transformers" tv/radio series, but the 45worlds.com separation of pulse, castle pulse, castle music (possibly pulse), (plc or ltd) ,etc. seems to lack any semblance of coherence, clear cut-off dates (or even sensible transition periods) - and they seem to largely share record/cd cat# series, overlapping all over the place in date, and time - "and meaning..."
- _is_ there any semblance of order underlying, with rules or general principles that can separate them - or do they really all belong together in the one cat# sequences (and release dates), and should be collected in one listing ?
I've been thinking about the same thing for Castle Communications and its sub-labels. I actually started creating label lists, which also included Raw Power and Essential, but its still a work in progress.

They're all part of Sanctuary music group.
I once went in search of Topic Records' original base in Bishops Bridge Road near Paddington Station. Just where their old offices were, was a load of new buildings and the numbering went haywire. I stumbled into an office to find out if they knew where the address was and found that after walking down a long dark corridor I was at the reception desk of Sanctuary. There were posters (framed of course) of Iron Maiden - the very first group I went to see in 1979 on the walls and a very dark, strange atmosphere. It explains why it is called Sanctuary Music Group because "Sanctuary" was the first major record they released - it came from "Metal For Muthas" Vol 1 and only just after the live EP "Soundhouse Tapes". I left without even finding the person who worked at reception.

What a disturbingly Kafkaesque story, you were lucky to get out of there ;-)
This is confirmed on most of the Castle/Pulse CDs, so I suggest we add a note or biography for Sanctuary, linking to all these sub-labels, and a 'see also' on each of the sub-labels. I've started working on this for CD Albums, but the whole excercise will need repeating on other Worlds

How confident can we be that Topic is connected with Sanctuary?
The addresses shown on Topic CDs is 50 Stroud Green Road, that on Sanctuary is Leatherhead Road, Chessington
Perhaps these two need not be linked

They're not linked, I think fokeman was saying Sanctuary are in Topics old offices not that they were linked as such?
Up until 1999/2000, Castle Communications was the main label, with Castle Classics, Essential etc. as sub-labels. Following the Sanctuary takeover, Castle Music was formed to include the sub-labels of Castle Communications, so by 2000 Castle Music will, for example, appear alongside Sanctuary.

Topic and Sanctuary are CERTAINLY not linked. Topic was founded in the late 1930s and was based in the Printers Union building on Bishops Bridge Road (as I said). When it left its parent organisation (The WMA) it was taken over by Gerry Sharp who lived in Nassington Road (London). Finally it moved to 50 Stroud Green Road with Tony Engle. I say finally, although the Stroud Green Offices have now been sold and it has moved to David Suff's headquarters in Rutland. The oldest independent record company in Britain (and maybe the world), it is still going strong! Nothing to do with Sanctuary which has swallowed up Castle which swallowed up (amongst others) Transatlantic Records.
The old Union buildings had long ago been demolished to make way for the office blocks, one of which now contains Sanctuary.
