Looking specifically at the very many Beatles releases on DVD such as the Rock Milestones series, they do state that they are unofficial. According to one of the Mods here, this should classify them as bootlegs. As these can be bought from most CD/DVD retail outlets, I'm sure that these retailers don't see them as such. Some are entered as bootlegs here and others as normal releases. Perhaps a category of "unofficial" may be more suitable than bootlegs for many of these releases. Any thoughts ????
I've been wondering along similar lines since the artistes tend to disown and avoid all participation in those "Critical Review" type things where they only ever show 20 seconds of clips because if they show any longer they'd have to start paying licensing and copyright fees. I've avoided those like the plague. It is staggering how many Beatles bootleg DVD's there are and I've seen quite a few of them sold in legitimate stores.
It's down to the mods ultimately, but I have no beef with the "unofficial" suggestion.

I too like the idea of "unofficial". I've started two Beatles lists, with one covering all releases and the other just covering what I believe to be "official" releases.

This thread originally pointed to unofficial DVD releases and we have the same situation with some CDs and tapes. Some countries have different rules to us and release things willy nilly. I have many many bootleg CDs - DVDs - Tapes - LPs and I create a distinction as what constittutes a bootleg as opposed to an unofficial release.
All of the major retailers including the on-line variety sell "Unofficial"releases but not abvious bootlegs.
Again, perhaps it's time for a classification when uploading these "Unofficial Releases"
I have several Beatles [and other artists] CDs and tapes that I bought in Germany and Turkey in the 1990's and they are unofficial and not classed here as bootlegs.
