Thanks for that Zab, of great historical interest and value, although I never liked Chaplin, never made me laugh, that was interesting to read.
I never "got" silent comedy and I certainly didn't find him funny when sound kicked in.
What made me laugh in the 30s would be the Marx Brothers, Laurel & Hardy and WC Fields.

Three Stooges, Abbott and Costello.

From the silent era, Harold Lloyd, Buster Keyton and The Keystone Cops all had the visual comedy.
