I don't understand why they said "VHS won over Betamax because of the 3 Hour recording as opposed to the 1 Hour recording". If memory serves me right a Betamax L750 cassette was capable of 3 hours 15 minutes of record time. I worked in electrical retail back in the 70's for a TV rental company and remember well the arrival of VCR's, and from what I remember the reason VHS took off quicker was that the government of the day wanted to standardise the rental market and it was decided that VHS would be the standard. Betamax recorders were not available to rent although you could buy one if you wanted. Sony was the only one available at the start and the cost was prohibitive so people trundled along to their rental store and for £17.99 a month they could hire a VHS. In recording quality terms Betamax was definitely better than VHS. The easiest way of telling this was to record the BBC Test Page which had those vertical columns with varying degrees of lines in them and the Betamax could record the finer detail lines more so than VHS. It was like pioneering days and now they're consigned to the history books

I heard it was only the professional broadcast version this is being discontinued in 2106, the consumer Beta tapes have been out of production for a decade or more already. The very early Betamax tapes did have a shorter time before they added the slower speeds.
