Obviously 78rpm discs were the main format when the charts started in 1952, so the first 78 #1 by default was

Al Martino - Here In My Heart in November 1952
CL.13779

The last 78rpm only #1 was
Lonnie Donegan - Putting On The Style in June 1957
N.15093

I believe the last #1 issued on 78rpm format was
Roy Orbison - Only The Lonely from October 1960
HLU.9149
Although I've never seen it, even a scan, and I think it was a 'special order'.

Yep, my RRPG has Only The Lonely listed as a 78, price £500. (It's quite an old copy - price may have changed since.)

A UK 78 I assume! So it wasn't my imagination. Has anyone ever seen it, even on eBay or the like?

What about Running Bear by Johnny Preston - could that be the first #1 without a 78 release, so 45 only? I can only see a South African 78 online but don't have the RRPG.

I have yet to see a proper UK 78 of Running Bear. All I have ever seen is the South African one, although it can be proposed that a 78 may exist in India, the Philippines, Uruguay, and Brazil.

One is also possible in Canada, as Running Bear was on Mercury 71474 and Broken Hearted Melody by Sarah Vaughn was on 78 as Mercury 71477 (I won the Sarah Vaughn record)

That said, it did appear on the boxset of fake 78s from Rhino, and as far as I am concerned is not even worth consideration due to the pretentiousness of it all

It's listed in Paul Pelletier's London Records discography on 78rpm, too. I really want to see the label!
