Always a 'secondary' format, rather than the main way people bought singles in the UK, but I'm still interested to know the first and last UK #1s which were available on this format.
As far as I can tell, the first was John Lennon - Woman - February 1981 K 79195M
The last one was most likely Busted – Who's David in February 2004

Very few were pressed, as the format had been discontinued in November 2003.

The late 90's and early 00's were my era, so I remember the cassette single well, I particularly loved/hated how you could usually get a B-side or remix that was exclusive to the format.

I tried to collect the REM ones but I think I may have missed quite a few...
It seems that cassette singles were quite sporadic in the early days of the format. I recall them being available for most big hits in the late 1990s. Wonder when their popularity peaked in the U.K.? Early 90s?

I have to wonder how many recordings are lost because they were only available on this rather fragile/ self-destructing format and never appeared on vinyl or CD
In the Beatles Monthly magazine, Feb 1981, it says, "a new Lennon single 'Woman' ... will also be released as a cassette-single (the latest collecable fad)."
Suggests maybe it wasn't the first one ever, or they might have made more of a statement about it.
That's interesting to know it was trailed upon release. I wouldn't think it was the first cassette single in the UK but it could well be the first to make #1.
An old Guinness British Hit Singles book I have says cassette singles were introduced in 1987 - which can’t be true given the ones we know about. However, it was possibly when cassette singles became widespread in the UK. The following year was when Kylie Minogue failed to enter the charts at #1 with Hand on Your Heart because sales of cassette singles were excluded from the chart!
