I have a Columbia 2 part book set of Handel's Messiah, Columbia Masterwork Albums numbers 101 & 102 containing in total 18 double sided records these are not 78s but 80 r.p.m..The set is conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham and the B.B.C. choir and was recorded at Central Hall, Westminster.I can find nothing at all on the internet about this volume, has anyone any thoughts that might give me an idea as to when this was recorded. The Artists include Hubert Eisdell, Muriel Brunskill, Harold Williams, Dora Labbette, Muriel Brunskill, Nellie Walker. The records are dirty but look as though they haven't been played much. Any body able to help? thank's Rog

This is as close as I got with a search:

ebay listing

With two of the artists mentioned on the right label, but no date.

Individual searches for names in Google/Bing don't turn up much either, and they don't appear in Popsike's listings.

No dates for any of the above either.

On site here the Columbias have only one similarly numbered disc at DX 121, which is given as dated 1930s... so would presume yours is pre 1930s by virtue of that.

I was hoping the internet searches would turn up something for the individual artists, as by cross referencing their respective years of activity with the numbering scheme, it could help narrow it a bit.

But an 80rpm is a new one for me, so a 78er on site may be able to offer more illumination with regards to that, and perhaps further narrow date range through that.

The disc numbers go from 9320 to 9337 and the other number on the disc is AX2949 to AX 2959.. there are no prefix letters on the disc number. the 101 & 102 numbers are the book numbers.thanks Rog

This could be one of the records 9335
as for 80 RPM this was quite a common speed in the early years of gramophone records. The site is called 78 RPM as that is the common speed but the site contains many 80 RPM records. My own wind up Gramophone has an adjustable speed control as many records played at other speeds.

Columbia 80 r.p.m

Have a rummage in the basement where we keep the Classical stuff

( link at the bottom of the page - 45worlds is still ashamed of classical music for some reason, and so won't give us a button at the top of the page with all the other cool kids worlds! )

Originally issued as Columbia L2018 - L2035 in January 1928 they were transferred to 9320 etc in February 1928. The recordings were made between 24 June and 8 Oct 1927. They were deleted from the catalogue in Feb 1948.

You are right, Jock Girl. If anyone wants it pay the postage and both book sets are free. two of the records have slight damage that can be repaired. and the book covers have seen better days. but saying that the records look like they have not been played much. Rog from Doncaster U.K
