Just picked these up at a chazza here in Canada

Springbok Hit Parade 27
Springbok Hit Parade 28

Of course apart from the obvious question of 'How did they make it to Canada, and its west coast?', I have a question.

I know what Springbok Radio was and its great history. I wonder though, if these are all the product of South African studios/ studio musicians or did EMI cross pollinate tracks from other series in other countries?

Quality is overall not too bad with the version of Bohemian Rhapsody on 27 being quite tasty.

Wow! They did Bo-Rap? I never spotted that one.

I have previously sound checked a couple to see if they contain the same cover versions as the UK mfp "Hot Hits" etc, and they don't. I believe they are purely of South African making - a local studio group. I know of no equivalent series in the world, over such a long time-span which they could have been borrowing from.

That said, is the version of Bo-Rap the same version as this (the only cover version I know of)? A give-away is the closing line, where the Top of the Pops recording below goes, "Nothing really matters much to me" - an unnecessary "much" inserted for no reason!

The Springbok version of Bo-Rap is a different recording. Just a tad faster.. The Top of the Pops vocalist sounds a bit more 'nasal' as wll.

Thanks for that, Jock Girl. I'm certain they're all S.A. recordings. Will look out for a copy of that Bo-Rap!
