I've come across a few CDs on one or other of these label names...

...but closer scrutiny on individual issues reveals that they may be the same "label".

So while there are many CDs under the Edel name, there are many under the Ear Music name.

Are they the same in every instance, and if so, how should that label be presented?

Edel is a German based record label founded I think at the beginning of the 80s.

EarMusic is a "sub-label" of Edel formed in 2009 with the aim of releasing alt rock/metal on the international market.

Owned by the same people I guess but two separate labels for all intents and purposes.

As an aside, about 18 months ago I came across this entry on the associated EarBooks label (entered by Magic Marmalade no less). I added a couple of scans showing that it was also issued on the Jazzee Blue label in the UK with identical ISBN and barcode (so I didn't create a separate entry). My comment at the time also pondered whether the flag should be changed to Germany or Europe rather than UK but that's a separate issue.
Anyway, the point of this rambling is really just to say I agree with Sladesounds - 2 separate labels for all intents and purposes.

:embarrassed:

(It was my best guess at the time.... honest!)

But what if both appear on a CD with equal "billing"?

I would suggest that if Earmusic is shown then it is a Earmusic release with Edel being entered as other label. A bit like some of The Beatles' Apple/Universal releases of late.

I'll have a closer look at these two labels next week then.
