The first in the world was apparently a very limited pressing of Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits
More info here

Wikipedia also cites Whitney's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" as the first CDS to make #1 in the UK, the same year the format qualified for inclusion on the chart. Any idea what the first one to chart in the UK was?

I was always under the impression that it was this John Martyn CD, or maybe it was just the first UK CD Single

Thanks for the link, a few contenders then. John Martyn didn't chart, probably excluded.

Zabadak, if you look on hmv.com or Amazon, you can search for recently released CD singles and there have been a few this year. Take That did one about six months ago... they are a novelty now though alas.

Sadly the entire concept of the single is a novelty these days. I cringe when I see something that says "has a new single out this week", because it is so far from true. Given the way music is sold these days, every track is a single as you don't have to buy an entire album.

And then there are those record store day singles and those special lathe cut 45s that, to me, reek of pretentiousness.

RIP the 45 RPM single

Amy

RIP the single, full stop.

I realised it had died when I went into HMV about 18 months ago and asked where their singles were, as it had been so long since I'd looked. I was told they don't do them any more. So the single as a physical artefact is an endangered species, if not fully dead. Suspect: the internet.

Don't go into HMV. Go into Rough Trade - they have racks full new 45s.

Guinness British Hit Singles 2003 says the first CD singles were released in 1988. There were several before that so a bit of a mistake there.
