FTAO Moderators
Am in the process of linking CD Albums (just about to start on "Q",after working backwards from "Z")(T.Rex and the Supremes have been the most challenging so far,so many compilations/name variations etc...;),and thought i'd take the time to bring a couple of potential problems to the Moderators attention.
1/ Still coming across a few that are "weighted" to the primary release, which makes it difficult to add new links,i think you know about this one, and,to be fair,it's only been a few, but,of course,as we know, all albums should be able to cross-link with any other album in an ideal world (of the same name/by the same artist),so,it would be handy if they could be "de-weighted"/not giving any one as the primary release,if at all possible?
2/ Multiple album CD releases...
When there are releases with 2/3/4/5 or more albums on them, you can not link them directly to the original albums as normal,as the problem is that if a release features two albums for instance, album "A" and album "B",then when you go to link it to say 3 releases of album "A",then go to link it to say 4 releases of album "B",then,as you are aware,it then carries over all of the album "A" releases to album "B",in other words,it tries to link the 3 copies of "A" to "B",which, obviously,is not desired. So,i have been linking multiple album releases via the "See Also" link, rather than the usual "Linked Releases",this is the only way.
I have not named these multiple album releases, just "See Also" linked them for the moment, leaving them blank,as i was unsure of what to call them exactly..."2 on 1",or "2 Albums" or "Multiple Albums",etc, etc,so was unsure, and have left them blank until a suitable title for them be chosen.
3/ One thing that keeps cropping up,is that members are adding "Deluxe Edition",or "Special Edition" to the album title field, which creates a nightmare whilst searching for an album title, could i therefore take this opportunity to ask members adding CD's to only put the album title in that field, and use the format field for "Special Edition",and only if "Deluxe Edition" or similar is on the actual spine of the CD (which often mirrors the CD text) should it be used in the album title field (as it's a format description, not part of the original album title),that would be great.
(if in doubt, look to the spines for the title)
There is a series of releases with a plastic opaque slip-cover with "Deluxe Edition" on the front, could i ask that this not be added to the album titles, and, instead be flagged "Special Edition" in the format field and "tagged" below,as "Deluxe Edition" "Series",as it's the series name, and not part of the title, this would be a great help, and will aid album searches.(i have already started to group the "Deluxe Edition" releases under this series name).
Well, that's it for the mo,i'll carry on ...(Queen are coming up soon;),and i'll let you know if i spot any more potential hiccups
cheers

The 'Primary Release' concept works for me but I see it most on 45cat where the primary is less contentious. I can see it can be problem where 'International' or 'Europe' come out at the same time as USA or UK releases.

Suggest you flag up any you are unhappy about, here or via 'corrections'

Yes, The earliest likely release. So usually the artist's native country

Another issue here is when the first version of an item that is entered on the site is not from the "primary" territory or country. In my experience this issue then by default becomes the primary release. As others are added it can make it confusing to determine which issue is the primary release unless a MOD changes that to match the original region of primary release. So while it is usual that the country of original release is the primary release it is not always the case and this can cause linking nightmares for site users that are not MODS and can't actually see which release is the primary release.
A good rule of thumb though in these instances for NON-MODS is to search for the item by title in that world and usually the first listing to appear will be the primary release.

Alas, that's not the case Lee,whenever you search by album CD title, they come up in random order,i.e,not primary release first, and not in chronological order. If you search the same album name 2 or 3 times, you'll see what i mean,it's just random,so it's hard for us to determine which is the primary release,as it's not clear whether it's by the earliest date or the first entered on the site,or by CD's without a date yet.
So i think i'll just point out any that are weighted here,as has been suggested.,cheers;)

Well that's the end of the thumb theory then Greg. I do hate it though when the assembled links splinter into a thousand different pieces and you can't put them back together.
