I am not at all satisfied with my scans of the cassette chassis, if you have any advice on how to best use the scanner for this case please let me know!

To stop the lines appearing on the clear shells scan the shell at 90 degrees.

Maybe put a background on, to stop the light burning through the clear plastic. For example, rest a sheet of paper over the cassette while it scans.

Bit of clear non reflective glass ( there was something on youtube about that - technology connections re autocue workings ) to lift up The shells etc to a constant height - an idea ,don\t know if it will work
