Has anybody noticed a 12 sided centre hole on a UK Columbia 78rpm circa Autumn 1936 or later, as mentioned on the cover of this supplement?

I can't imagine it would have been of much use if the spindle itself was still round.

No, but seeing this means that I will be checking the records from my collection in a day or two. Very interesting.

I've added a few pages from this supplement (link above) for guidance about the catalogue numbers when this would have been introduced, but you can probably ignore page 3.

I wonder if you have seen this scrough ?

Quite a lengthy 'discussion' about 12 sided centre holes. It seems that HMV produced them too ?

It seems that they are not immediately noticeable because the label hole is round ?
So you have to hold up to 'the light' and look carefully.

Thanks, I hadn't seen that.

Peter Adamson's article refers to the November 1936 supplement, but we now know the polygon hole was also advertised in the previous month. So I'll get a scan sent off to him.

I'll also check through my HMV supplements for any mention.

You can view the article as PDF with images here

Presumably too, that after the record's been played a few times, the edges wear off and it becomes round again...

Some of my record players have the centre spindle reversable, maybe they were done like that. Odd too that Polygon was chosen as an independent label name in the 1950s!

How strange I never knew that, a quick skip through the images here show up two possible candidates, look very carefully at the way the paper has worn on

I has always thought that was how the whole had worked and worn over time.
