Dear Cinema Lover,
For this week's Film Essentials, we suggest 8½.
Federico Fellini’s 8½ is a 1963 Italian surrealist comedy-drama film starring Marcello Mastroianni as Guido Anselmi, a famous Italian film director who suffers from stifled creativity as he attempts to find inspiration for his next blockbuster film (an epic sci-fi). His search for inspiration leads him down many strange, twisted paths and these journeys provide countless memorable scenes.
Increasingly, the line between Guido’s musing and his real-life activities begins to fade, making it difficult for viewers to discern. In one scene, he gives a press conference on the set of his unmade film. As Fellini suggested, his films are trials, but as seen by an accomplice, rather than by a judge. The title represents the number of films Fellini had made at that time. It is acknowledged as avant-garde and highly influential (it was the inspiration for the Tony award-winning musical Nine), and considered to be one of the greatest films ever made - with director Martin Scorsese listing it as one of his favourites.
The film is available to be viewed on the MUBI online platform. As a Regent Street Cinema mailing list member, this service is FREE for three months from when you sign up. If you signed up in early April, the gratis period will be drawing to a close and if you do not wish to continue with Mubi, opt out of their subscription plan.
