Hu Guys
I'm new to this forum. I have 170 Kg approx of 78s unsorted except by size. I've collected and hoarded these for the last 60 years!.. I don't want many of them, nor am I willing to list them - most are probably unwanted and worthless. These I guess, are good for landfill. Before offering them, I'm proposing getting rid of the dross, but need some help.
Starting with the 12". They're mostly all classical. I've kept back Cohen on the Telephone and a jazz record. Are there any artists like Rachmaninoff playing Rachmaninoff, or opera singers that I should look out for?
10" - Do I dump all the Bing Crosby, Vera lynn, Mario Lanza, Band of HM Irish Guards etc?
etc. Who/what shall I look for?
That'll do for now.
Cheers!

As regards your initial mail......There is still a market for Bing Crosby and Vera Lynn on collectors lists not so much of anything else you mention

Well, I’m interested in Vera Lynn records, for one. Where are you located? I’d at least give the collection to a charity shop rather than binning the records.

No charity shops in my area accept 78's I was told not to donate them so unfortunately my unwanted ones go to landfill.

No charity shop would take this lot. I can imagine the look of horror. We're talking about 450 to 500 records. I live near Rugby.
How about the small ones? In the 8" size there are:
31 Eclipse red
9 Eclipse blue
28 Broadcast
!3 Radio
3 Plaza
Also 10 Crown 9"
3 The Victory 7"
2 Little Marvel 6"
Are these labels of any interest. What do I look for? Does anyone collect Lesley Sarony, Carol Porter or Michel Desmond?
I also have a box (47) of 40s to 50s 10" jazz.
As for the rest of them - I've still to look through these, fish out the 50s stuff.

If I lived closer would take them off your hands, the Plaza and Little Marvel are the most interesting of the smaller size ones IMHO.

Maybe put them on eBay as a job lot. Or you could bring them to the Birmingham record fair next month. There's actually one in Coventry soon too. See this page.

You might consider taking them to Croydon record fair. There are enough 78rpm dealers who might take them off your hands and give you enough to make it worth your while?

The Croydon record fair with 78s hasn't run for years... unless I'm missing something?

I've been out of the Record Fair scene for the last 12 years. Sorry to hear it isn't still going...

As far as charity shops not wanting certain items, a few years ago I wanted ti dispose of about 1200 music cassettes and about 150 or so VHS tapes. Apart from Beatles, Rolling Stones etc. No one wanted them and I ended up dumping them at our local recycling centre (much to my later regret !!!!!). My advice would be to give them away rather than dump them.

Hi Guys
Thanks for all your replies
I really want someone to come and collect the lot. I don't fancy humping them around the country to no avail. Nor am I willing to list them all.
I'm happy to whittle (scrap) the collection down by getting rid of genres that have little or no value. I'm just not sure which these are. Anyone interested in Marching Bands?
Unfortunately I'm away for both the Rugby and Coventry fairs. I'll likely potter along to the Birmingham one to get some advice.
Meanwhile I'll do a bit of sorting.
Cheers!

If you were close by, I'd take them all! 6000 miles is too far for me to walk.

The Jazz ones will sell in trickle numbers on Discogs to the right collector/s inc shipping overseas (more difficult now stupid VAT and some export tariffs apply but normal post seems to miss a bit of that so might be doable).

Are Record Fair traders/customers even looking for 78s now. Its generally CDs and LPs that seem to be the main business with £1 run of mill 45s and mega money for rare collectible 45s.
Like many things sometimes the best time to have sold 78 collections was 12 years ago.
