All of these 78’s are in the relevant catalogues as being issued in the period 1940-1949……but….It is strange that of all the collectors that I have contacted over the last three years, none of these 8 appear in any collections, are on any compilations or have ever been photographed…..It leaves me to wonder if there are small errors in the titles as I know them or incorrect artists as listed…..I have all their catalogue numbers but that does not seem to help….So here are the 8……All I need to know is, do you have a photo or do you have the recording ?
My Daddy – Phyllis Robins Parlophone F 1703
Dreaming – Beryl Davis Decca F 7472
If Tears Could Bring You Back – The Organ, The Dance Band & Me (Billy Thorburn) Parlophone F 1786
Do You Care – Geraldo Parlophone F 1889
I Don’t Want To Walk Without You – Joe Loss HMV BD 5742
I’m Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes – Jay Wilbur Rex R 10187
Panda Walk – Billy Cotton Rex R 10236
Anniversary Song – Billy Cotton Rex R 10238
F 1786 is also correct:
Billy THORBURN'S THE ORGAN, THE DANCE BAND AND ME
H. Robinson CLEAVER, organ, with Billy THORBURN, piano and His Dance Band
F1786 CE10587-1 12.11.40 If Tears Could Bring You Back, wz. (Connor, Sherman)
Coupled with:
CE10588-1 12.11.40 I'll Never Make the Same Mistake Again, ft. (J.L.Smith)
Available from 12/40 to 2/43
vocals 1. Terry Devon, 2. Alan Kane
Funnily enough, Billy Thorburn also included the first track in a Waltz Medley on Parlophone F 1811. Just him at the piano with drums.
GERALDO and His Orchestra
F1889 CE10891 -1 19. 1.42 Do You Care? SFT. (Elliott, Quailing)
CE10892-1 19. 1.42 The man with the lollypop song, SFT (Petrillo, Ross, Shawn)
2/42 to 1/44
vocals - Dorothy Carless (10891) Jack Hunter (10892)
You don’t mention the vocalists on the others, so maybe you aren’t interested?
Do you have British Dance Bands on Record? There’s a free download of it here. It’s searchable too.
HMV BD 5742 is in there, with vocals by Harry Kaye. Recorded 16 April 1942. Coupled with “Who'll Buy A Rose From Margareeta ?” (Don Rivers vocal).
“If Tears Could Bring You Back To Me” is the title in that book.
“I'm Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes” Jay Wilbur Rex R 10187 recorded 29 July 1943. “They'll All Be Coming Back, Bye And Bye” is the other side. Vocals by Alan Kane on both.
Panda Walk – Billy Cotton Rex R 10236 issued February 1947. “The Mission of the Rose” / “The Panda Walk” in my listing.
Anniversary Song – Billy Cotton Rex R 10238
Issued May 1947. The first side listed is “Something’s Wrong and That Ain’t Right”.
So that’s pretty good evidence for those records existing. I don’t have a Decca discography I can check for those titles.
GERALDO and His Orchestra
F1889 CE1 0891 -1 19. 1.42 Do You Care? sft. (Elliott, Quailing)
CE10892-1 19. 1.42 Jim, sft (Petrillo, Ross, Shawn)
2/42 to 1/44
vocals - Dorothy Carless
The other side of F-1889 is not "Jim", it's "The Man With The Lollypop Song" (CE-10892-1, 19/01/42, vocal Jackie Hunter).
Geraldo's version of "Jim" is on F-1888 coupled with "Elmer's Tune". Funnily enough both Rust & Forbes British Dance Bands on Record and The Missing Charts book wrongly credit Jim/Elmer's Tune to F-1892, suggesting that the latter might well have been using the former if only to double-check catalogue numbers.
Dorothy Carless also recorded a solo version of "Do You Care" (coupled with "Jim"), the following month, which was released on Decca F-8070. That is also in the Missing Charts book, and has featured on various LPs and CDs.
Ah, good thing you pointed that out. The member here known as Scrough sent me a draft Parlophone listing which had been intended for publication, probably by the CLPGS. It is credited to “Frank Andrews & Michael Smith
With assistance from Norman Field, Jerry King & Bill Dean-Myatt”. I was looking at an earlier version of the file. Version 2 does indeed list the “The Man With The Lollypop Song” as the flipside, not “Jim”. I’ll correct that. The file has the coupling you mention for F 1888. Useful to know about the error in BDBR: F 1892 is actually by Edmundo Ros! The mistake isn’t even mentioned in the Supplement to the book. I’ve informed Mike Thomas, who is keeping track of the amendments to the book.
I wonder how that error got repeated - you would have thought TMC book’s authors would use a better source than BDBR. But somehow, the error is also in the earlier draft of the Parlophone file. Maybe they all repeated what was in BDBR.

King’s College has 3 copies of Parlophone F 1703; 2 of Decca F 7472; 1 of Parlophone F 1786; 2 of Parlophone F 1889; 1 of HMV BD 5742; 2 of Rex 10187; 2 of Rex 10236; and 2 of Rex 10238. So they certainly exist. They were probably the copies provided to the BBC upon release.

I emailed them last night about the fact their website doesn’t mention the archive, or the fact they can do transfers. If and when I hear back, I’ll PM you the email address for the guy in charge. I wonder if the British Library are cheaper overall though.
