In a local charity shop today, a copy was up for sale for £50. I inquired politely why and got the usual 'the man who prices our records says it's worth that much'.
Anybody know if this is a rare variant or should I snap up all the copies on ebay and Discogs going for less

This seems to happening a lot in chazzers lately ? Its a £5 record and I would expect that to be in at least EX cond. The demo version is worth the same.. It got to number 3 in the charts (42 years ago!) there is no shortage of copies around.

Same thing happened with videogames a while back so old football games worth literally pennies got marked up because it is "retro". One of the Soft Cell related items worth decent money is the biography Last Star. I don't own it, but I've ended up with some odd books from charity shops.
