I'm trying to find out something about a 1962 girl group, possibly black, that had a 1962 release on Warner Brothers. The group is called The Pearls and the songs are Happy Over You (Leo McCorkle) b/w If I Had a Choice (McCorkle/ Henry). A 45 was issued on Warner Brothers in the USA on catalogue #5300. In the Philippines this made it on 78 in late 1962 -- same catalogue number. -- I have posted it here: http://www.45worlds.com/78rpm/record/w5300

Other details -- The group was 'under the supervision of Stan Applebaum. The record is 'A GPB production Arranged by Bert Keyes'.

The writer, Leo McCorkle, is a New York musician who is known among Northern Soul fans for his songs and productions as well as a release on Popside records called Please Send me a Somebody Else in 1967. Appaently his full name was William Leo McCorkle. The 'Henry on the flip is a K. Henry who co-wrote a Crystals lp track called Frankenstein Twist.

Stan Appelbaum is well known for arrangements from Glenn Miller to Ben E King as well as stuff on Cameo and Parkway

All that said -- I can't find anything about the group The Pearls. Its not a 50s R&B group and not the 70s girl group from the UK as far as I know

Hi Jock_Girl. I can't really add a lot to this but must admit to being intrigued. Leo McCorkle's "Please Send Me A Somebody Else" is one of my fave deep soul tracks and I'm interested in his involvement here. Both songs were registered at LOC in July 1962 to William [Leo] McCorkle. The co-writer on the flip was Kate Henry who according to a couple of blogs on the net was actually the mother of Dee Dee Kenniebrew (Dolores Henry) of The Crystals. Berpem Music I think was owned by session bassist Bill Pemberton who was associated with McCorkle at the time. I have no idea at this stage who was involved with GPB Productions. Anyway, Kate Henry only ever registered two songs, both written with McCorkle, the other one being the bizarrely titled "Frankenstein Twekenstein Twist", sensibly shortened when recorded by the Crystals. There has been speculation over the years that Ronnie Spector was involved with the Heartbreakers record on Atco which also had McCorkle songwriting involvement, so I'm kinda curious if The Crystals (or at least Dee Dee Kenniebrew) just maybe moonlighted as The Pearls when Phil Spector sidelined them in favour of Darlene Love and co. After all you would be pissed off and with mom and Mr. McCorkle whispering in your ear you'd be tempted to moonlight. Calling Davie Gordon, who has been involved in McCorkle discussion elsewhere and may know something more!

Wow! If this is in fact actually the Crystals or some of them, then this is the closest we may ever get to a finding any 60s era Spector goodies on 78s.

I'm still waiting for someone to unearth a Philles release on 78 -- a real one even if on London -- as opposed to any repros or stuff on labels like Rhino.

Thats right up there with a Rolling Stones 78 for me

Please note that a Crystals connection is only idle speculation on my part. I sometimes connect the wrong dots so I'd love to hear what others think about this. Maybe we should take this over to 45cat where there's more '60s collectors...

Mickey, here's the link to a post I did back in 2007 for Spectropop when I was researching William McCorkle - if I can find time (hah !) I might try and update it.

Thanks Davie. I know what you mean about finding time. To paraphrase John Lennon - life is what happens while you're trying to research Leo McCorkle. Or something like that.
