 I have many Australian 78s but can't work out the A and B sides. Not as simple as 45s it seems. Especially HMV 78s which are similar to the UK ones. I note people have already submitted some UK HMV 78s but how do they know which is the A side ? Can someone please help me as I am nearly ready to dive into the great big deep pool of 78s. I love this new site. Congratulations to the originators. About time these old labels were displayed globally !!!

Many contributors seem to use the Matrix-numbers as a guide. Making the side with the lower Matrix-number the A side.
This may of course not always be what the record company intended, but in lack of other info this does the job nicely, I think.

Sometimes the matrix numbers are wildly different, not even the same number of digits! Minefield!

This can quite often occur when the 78rpm has two different artists, say one British and one American, or two recordings of the same artist made in different countries. I don't think you need to worry too much about which is the A or B if it isn't marked that way. Its more important to get your record listed. After all, entries can always be corrected by someone else who might know the answer.

In a lot of cases they don't really have an A and a B side... it's just a record with two sides. For a while you could read all the old editions of Gramophone on their website for free. Back in the twenties and thirties they'd frequently review both sides of a disc, with no mention of As and Bs.
