Sorry to ask another :embarrassed:
I've got a 78 to list where the artist names on the label are not the artists' real names. What's the entry method recommended here?

There is currently no method available for you to link a new artist name to a existing one, so for that situation you should request a new link in a forum topic such as this one, then a moderator will do it for you.
If the 'primary' artist name to be linked to does not yet exist, just add a comment in the notes, and we can sort it out when the time comes.

Some labels and some artists (Ben Selvin for example) were notorious for recording for other labels under pseudonyms... And to make matters worse, some of these fake band names were re-used by labels for tracks cut by other bands...so linking band names could be problematic if more than one band recorded under a particular moniker. Links would be great, but this practice of labels re-using band names should be kept in mind.
It's probably safest to use the names as printed on the record, then add the real band, if known, in the comments.
Some labels were notorious for changing the band name if they used the same recording for different department store labels.
Many bands were under contract to a particular label, but would do recording sessions for other labels for extra cash. Some smaller labels did this a lot, and would try to record any bands on tour in the area as they passed through.
When the same recording was put out on different labels with different names, perhaps we could link them.. Just my thoughts, anyway..

This practice continued well after the 78 rpm era... I have several theater organ LPs from the 50s and 60s.. By "George Montalba" who did not exist... One record even has a lengthy fake biography on the back..and they are not all recorded by the same organist. In those days a big name organist, like George Wright, might be under contract to Conn, a maker of electronic organs... But then not allowed put out recordings on an organ made by Wurlitzer, a competitor.

If it had been Ed Lloyd's Orchestra or The Denza Dance Band, etc. I would have know what to do  .. just add the real band in the notes, and explain that this was a generic name in the biog.

But this is at the birth of 78s - 1908/9, and these aliases were only used on one label - The Twin - and then never again..
