TV Series
Notes Preceded by a pilot special that aired in late 1989. AFV predated by decades the "Youtube" trend of sharing funny and unusual videos. Originally, viewers used VHS and other tape-based cameras and sent the tapes in for consideration. Over time this has evolved to uploads and smartphone cameras. The series was inspired by a Japanese series titled Fun TV with Kato-chan and Ken-chan. A number of spin-offs have aired: America's Funniest People, World's Funniest Videos, and two series, That's Funny and Show Me the Funny, were compiled from AFV submissions. Spin-offs also were produced outside the US, including Australia's Funniest Home Videos and Australia's Naughtiest Home Videos, the latter cancelled by the head of the Nine Network during its debut broadcast and pulled from the air before it finished airing. AFV did not air as a regular series during the 1999-2000 season, instead airing as occasional specials with guest hosts. The series returned as a weekly program in 2001. Saget hosted the series at the same time he was co-starring in the sitcom Full House, while it was one of a number of game shows and other series hosted by Bergeron at the same time. In 2015, actor Alfonso Ribeiro (a recent victor of the Bergeron-hosted Dancing with the Stars) was named the new host for the series.
