This series was inspired by a German programme titled "Aktenzeichen XY ... ungelöst" and the UK series "Crimewatch" and was preceded by a pilot special that aired prior to the regular series beginning.

It was the longest-running series on the Fox network until being surpassed by The Simpsons. The series was cancelled by Fox in 2011 and then moved to the Lifetime cable network before it was cancelled for good in 2012. John Walsh - the only regular host the series ever had - later launched a similar series, The Hunt, on CNN.
