Live-broadcast late-night weeknight comedy-variety series in New York City. The first of its kind, it is considered a direct antecedent of The Tonight Show. Show was initially hosted by Morey Amsterdam twice a week, with rotating hosts due the show's originally hired host having died before the series premiered. Lester eventually hosted three nights a week, then all 5 after Amsterdam left. Dagmar (stage name of Jennie Lewis) joined as a comic foil for Lester and soon became the first TV superstar. She also became one of if not the first woman to host a late-night series of this nature when she became its host briefly after Lester quit. After cancellation, Broadway Open House was retooled as local series for Steve Allen, later to debut nationally as Tonight.
