TV Series
Notes Eddie Mayehoff (formerly the host of one of TV’s earliest variety shows, Hour Glass) played friendly neighbourhood dentist “Doc” Ambrose Corkle who had a relatively successful dental practice but was always flat broke because his patients fail to pay him. Doc lives with his sister Nellie, teenage daughter Laurie, and his father Simon, who tries to help out by fixing things, though his repairs never turn out successfully. His well-meaning, but blundering, cousin Melinda has a wealthy son named Winfield "Windy" Dill, who has a crush on Laurie, though she has never been interested in him. Originally called The Eddie Mayehoff Show but changed the last minute, the show premiered on October 5th, 1952. The sponsor, Reynolds Aluminum, was so disappointed with the show that they pulled the series after only two weeks with the third and final episode airing on October 19, 1952. Reynolds then rushed scripts out for a summer replacement show that was so popular that thousands wrote to NBC saying they wanted it back. The show was Mr. Peppers staring Wally Cox and was notable for when Peppers got married being one of televisions first major events. Mr. Peppers would run until June of 1955. Since Doc Corkle initially had a 39-week contract, Mayehoff negotiated a settlement of $50,000 upon its cancellation.
