An early example of the "dramedy" format. This was one of the only examples (another being The Love Boat) of a one-hour filmed series, not a sitcom, to have a laugh track added, although some international versions omit the sound effect.

Followed by two reunion TV movies: Eight is Enough: A Family Reunion (1987) and An Eight is Enough Wedding (1989).

The character of David Bradford was played by a pre-Star Wars Mark Hamill in the pilot episode.
