Notes

Preceded by a radio series, also starring Young, that ran from 1949 to 1954. The pilot for the TV series aired in early 1954 as an episode of The Ford Television Theatre, however the characters were renamed from the radio show. When the series was commissioned, the character names reverted to that used on radio; only Young appeared in the radio show, pilot episode and subsequent series as all other actors were recast.

The series was so popular that even though it was cancelled in 1960, reruns continued to air in prime time on CBS and later ABC until 1963. The series only ended because Young decided it was time to quit the show after 11 years of radio and TV.

Followed in 1977 by two reunion TV movies with the original cast: Father Knows Best Reunion and Father Knows Best: Home for Christmas.
