Spun off two animated series: The New Adventures of Gilligan (1974-1976) and a science-fiction retelling, Gilligan's Planet (1982-1983). In addition the 1974-1974 sitcom Dusty's Trail was created as an explicit remake of Gilligan's Island (with Bob Denver essentially reprising Gilligan, now renamed Dusty), reset as a western.

The original series was followed by a trilogy of TV movies that resolved the dilemma of the castaways. All three were seen as pilots for a potential revival series that was never made. All original cast members participated with the exception of Tina Louise (as a result, the first two films, Rescue from Gilligan's Island (1978) and The Castaways on Gilligan's Island (1979) featured Judith Baldwin in the role, with Constance Forslund taking on the role for the final film, The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island (1981).

Gilligan's Island became one of the only series in history to spin-off a reality TV series when the competition program The Real Gilligan's Island (a variant of Survivor) aired for two seasons between 2004 and 2005.

During the course of the series (and its follow-up movies), Gilligan's full name is never revealed. The real names of the Skipper and Professor are only mentioned a couple of times during the course of the franchise.
