First US prime time live-action scripted series to run for 20 seasons, and the only one to reach this milestone until Law & Order in 2010. Originally broadcast as a 30-minute series, it expanded to 60 minutes midway through its run; for a time reruns of older half-hour episodes were shown in prime time and syndicated under the title Marshall Dillon. Originally aired in the UK under the title Gun Law. Based upon a long-running radio series starring William Conrad as Matt Dillon; both TV and radio series co-existed until 1961. Followed by a series of TV movies starring Arness that aired in the 1980s and 1990s. John Wayne was offered the role of Dillon but declined; instead, the western film icon introduced the first episode in 1955.
