This started on our ABC-TV in 1992/93 but after the first or second season it switched to Station ATN-Sydney and Station HSV-Melbourne and their affiliates in our other state capitals and, Prime in Regional NSW and Victoria, which meant those bloody awful intrusive ads - BUMMER!!!

Sometimes they get the music right but wrong props. An example was the Australian miniseries Viet Nam which had Nicholas Eadie and Nicole Kidman in leading roles. Scene in episode one - Nicholas Eadie's character has been drafted into National Service and a farewell party is held. A HMV Minigram is playing an LP of The Easybeats but a shot of the player reveals not a vintage Parlophone-label album but a modern red-labelled Albert Productions issue. The year is supposed to be 1965, the Alberts label didn't exist until 1970 and the red-labelled version didn't appear until the 1980s. Another scene a couple of episodes into the series, Nicole Kidman's character gets a parting gift , an LP, supposedly of Procol Harum. We see her playing Whiter Shade Of Pale on a combo TV/Stereo Radiogram. The wooden lid is well polished so we can see the label as the disc spins. Is it a Deram issue? No! It's a Motown label we see reflected in that lid because the track is being played off the "Big Chill" soundtrack album. The year the scene is set in is supposed to be 1967 but we all know when the Big Chill was released, movie and soundtrack album, don't we?
Getting the props right is equally as important as getting the music to match the era, and both are EXTREMELY important!

That's partly why I could never get into this show or take it seriously - the way they mangled music chronology was farcical and lazy. If they couldn't take the extra bit of attention to getting the details right to recreate an era, then why should I pay attention to the show? As it was, it was rather... I dunno... "wet" to use a derogatory descriptive phrase. I don't know how many compilation soundtrack albums they squeezed out of this either... seemed to be a few.

This show started out on ABC in Australia, but after three or so series, moved to a commercial station(ATN-Sydney and affiliates in other states) plus regional affiliate, Prime. One jarring aspect of the show was how the music often didn't match the period in which a given episode was set. Example - Episode set in the year 1964, opening scene, a couple canoodling in a hayloft, a radio is playing in the background, the song: Son-Of-A-Preacher-Man by Dusty Springfield, which wasn't recorded or issued until 1968. That really detracted from what was otherwise a good show, sloppy or non-existent research into the music of the era.
